More on Detox (Klinghardt)

Organs of Elimination

·       Organs of elimination must be supported and working well before pursuing strong antimicrobial treatments or metal detox

·       The most important to consider are:

  • Liver and gallbladder
  • Kidneys
  • G.I.
  • Skin and lymph system

1. Settle down the inflammation:

**An important concept to remember is that the bacteria break apart the cells in our body to get the food they need = inflammation

 Cytokine Cascade

·       Stop the cytokine responses caused by the organisms, and the result is that you take away the environment that the bacteria need to survive.

·       By interrupting the cytokine cascade, you stop the cellular breakdown so the bacteria cannot get any nutrients from the host

·       Omegagenics SPM Active is very helpful to settle inflammtion - down regulates inflammation.

Metagenics has a product called OmegaGenics® SPM Active. Potential dose is up to 3 capsules, 3 times per day for the first month. Then three capsules, two times per day for the second month. Then three capsules per day onward. This turns down regulates innate immune response.

 2. Open blocked detox pathways

Symptoms of heavy metal toxicity:

Headaches, tinnitus, fatigue, neuropathy, cognitive dysfunction, sleep disorders, constipation, kidney failure, hypertension, muscle weakness, light sensitivity, depression, anxiety, impaired fertility, anemia.

Mercury toxicity mechanisms:

·       Denaturing enzymes

·       Displace minerals in cell and tissues

·       Interfere with the cell membranes functions, i.e. transport, uptake and release

·       Create free radicals/oxidative stress

·       Induction of inflammatory Cytokines

·       Mitochondrial damage

·       DNA damage

Toxicity-infections

·       Biotoxins from chronic infections are a major internal source of toxicity.

·       Combination of internal source with external environment exposures quickly overwhelms the body.

·       Lyme, Babesia, mold, parasites, etc.

·       Always have to balance killing of infections with clearing of toxins

·       Research now correlating increased toxin levels with increased parasitic infections.

Toxicity – EMFs

·       EMF exposure increases toxins produced by infections (bacteria, mold, parasites etc)

·       Increased levels of toxic metals amplify exposure to EMFs, increasing symptoms in patients

Detoxify

 i) Toxin binders

Binders are critically important to mop up biotoxins. If not used, the kidneys can become damaged.

Dr. Klinghardt’s favorite is Zeolite from the company BioPure. This will bind the biotoxins and glyphosate. The protocol is 1/2 teaspoon, 3 - 4 times per day between meals and before bed preferably. Best is about one hour after meals.

Chlorella is taken 30 min before meals. At the start of digestion, bile is released, which contains toxins. Chlorella will bind to these toxins and remove them through the feces, thus reducing the Herxheimer reaction.

Zeolite from BioPure extracts glyphosate from the gut bacteria. It balances multiple systems and removes fluoride from gut tissue. When we suffer with gut dysbiosis, the bad microbes are producing many biotoxins which zeolite can bind and remove. It is important to use a particular zeolite as it contain much less Al than other zeolite products (BioPure)

Zeolite binds agricultural chemicals and is highly antimicrobial. It also lowers ammonia in the blood and extracts radioactive substances.

 ii) Heavy metals

The biggest culprits are lead, mercury, and aluminum. Glyphosate is also a toxin of great concern.

Lead and aluminum toxicity can be reduced by 50% in just 39 days using a cilantro tincture and the foot ionizer bath. Traditional chelation would take seven years to accomplish this.

Dose: Potential dose is up to 2 pipettes of cilantro tincture three times a day, 30 minutes before meals as this stimulates digestion.

Use the ionic footbath two times per week maximum - equally spaced apart during the week. His team found that these metals are filtered out of the body mostly through the liver and kidney by using the footbath. The heavy metals are excreted through the hair, urine, and feces, but not much in the footbath. The maximum excretion of heavy metals takes place on Day 3 after the footbath.

Dr. Klinghardt does recommend the Sunlighten Saunas.

One must start low and go slow. Follow Klinghardt’s recommendations – 2 times per week maximum. Lifestyle is critical. This therapy helps the body to get back to its natural state.

Toxins and heavy metals are excreted through the urine, hair, skin, feces and a very small amount in the water of the footbath.

If the patient has been on many pharmaceuticals, this can cause a high release of ammonia where the water will be white.

Patients will release excess minerals, so it is important to take a good mineral supplement to ensure ATP production. Use tap water in the footbath. If you're using reverse osmosis water in the footbath, you can add Himalayan sea salt - not iodized salt.

It is important to drink more water and to take cilantro tincture, chlorella, a mineral supplement and electrolytes while doing this therapy.

You may be able to find a practitioner in your area. The cost may be about $45 per session.

Toxic Metals - Diagnostic and Lab Interpretation

  • Toxic metals-no single perfect test.
  • Hair analysis shows what you're able to excrete
  • Urine Pre-and Post Challenge show body burden
  • Serum shows current exposure
  • Urine porphyrin testing shows body burden

Labs – Hair Analysis

·       Must be a clean sample (no dies, hair products, be aware of shampoo used, etc)

·       Always need to look at toxic metals and minerals

·       Must evaluate Sulfur levels first - if they are low that is where you must start. Generally replete low levels with MSM - 2000 mg 2 - 3 times per day with meals

·       Metal retention pattern defined by apparent mineral deficiency

  Heavy-Metal Detox

·       Must always address metals and yeast together

·       Must address nutritional deficiencies first or won't be as productive with metal detox. (Minerals, KPU, etc)

·       Comprehensive minerals 6 capsules per day with meals

·       Bio Pure Micro Minerals - 1 Tablespoon 2 times per day in any liquid

·       Chlorella - wonderful but not tolerated by everyone; up to 10 - 30 tablets 3 times per day. Vulgaris may be better tolerated then Pyrenadosa for some

·       GCF chlorella - 2 caps 2 - 3 times per day

 Heavy-Metal Detox

·       Cilantro – 1 dropperfull 2 - 3 times per day in hot water before meals; can also use topically for sensitive patients. Also using handful of fresh herb as a tea or in soups

·

·       Metal Sweep (Bio Pure) - good for cleaning up the gut. Gentle and well tolerated by most

·       Silica - helpful for Aluminum detox; Bio Sil 10 drops 1 - 2 times per day in any food; also can use horsetail tea 2 cups daily.

Chemical Detox Support

·       Sauna is the most important

·       Very important to take a binder 20 - 30 minutes before sauna to capture toxins mobilized into the G.I. tract

·       Hydration with electrolytes (Bio Pure Matrix Electrolytes)

·       Glycine: 2000 - 6000 mg per day in divided doses with meals

Health conditions affecting toxic burden

KPU / HPU

·       Methylation defects and other genetic predispositions: Epigenetics

·       Nutritional deficiencies

 HPU / KPU

·       HPU – Hemopyrrollactamuria

·       KPU - Kryptopyrruluria

·       Signs and symptoms include: pale skin/inability to tan, white spots on nails, acne, poor stress tolerance, anxiety, depression, nausea, poor digestion, morning sickness, learning disorders, substance abuse, poor dream recall, fatigue.

 HPU & KPU

 ·       KPU is caused by the defect of several of the eight enzymes needed for the synthesis of heme.

·       Heme is needed for liver detox reactions (cytochromes), Cystathionine synthase, Catalase, Heme-hemopexin for MT translation, Guanylate cyclase, Sulfite – reductase, NO, Pyrrolase.

·       KPU patients have low serum glutathione levels, high NO levels, low histamine

·       KPU can be inherited or can be acquired

·       First discovered by Dr. Abraham Hoffer (1960): patients include schizophrenics (40 to 70%), Downs (70%), autism (50%), ADHD (50%), alcoholics and other addictions (20 to 80%), Lyme disease and other corn factions (80% positive-Klinghardt), toxic patients with mercury lead… (75% - Kinghardt)

 HPU & KPU

·       Core (Biopure) – 4 to 6 capsules per day with a meal. Initially can cause stomach upset if very Zinc deficient so may have to spread out or start low.

·       Lots of healthy fats; Evening Primrose Oil two caps with a meal

·       Have to watch copper with Zinc supplementation; eventually will need to supplement copper at 2 mg per day with food (away from Core)

·       Once zinc starts to be replaced - body will begin to mobilize toxins so be prepared with binders and chelation when necessary

Methylation Defects

·       Very popular topic these days.

·       Nutritional deficiencies include B6, B12, Folate and other significantly affect ability of the body to safely                and effectively eliminate toxins.

·       Supplementing these deficiencies, in the appropriate forms, can have profound impact on improving detox         capacity.

  Basic Methylation Labs

·       MTHFR gene testing – See next slide

·       Health Diagnostics Lab offers a full methylation panel test (looking at folates, glutathione, NO, SAM, SAH)         - very useful to see how genes are expressing

·       CBC shows chronic elevated MCV not responsive to B12 (or someone who tends to have red urine after a          B12 shot)

·       Doctors Data Methylation Panel and Oxidative Stress Panel

·       Folate receptor binding and blocking antibodies

·       Methylmalonic acid as best measure of B12 space

 Basic Methylation Labs

·       RBC and serum folate levels (not that helpful, since not differentiating folic from folates)

·       Serum B12 - rarely low, but if it is the patient is in serious need

·       Meridian Valley Lab neutrophil hypersegmentation % - the lower the better. Higher percentages indicate that there are more 5 lobed immature neutrophils in the blood that don't seem to have enough folate to mature properly. (good article by Dr. Jonathan Wright June 2010 Nutrition and Healing)

·       Do not worry about high B12 or folate in the serum (this may just be reflective of poor transport into the cell) - think pancreatic insufficiency, lack of intrinsic factor, bacterial intestinal overgrowth

·       CSF folate levels are also being done in some autistic children

 MTHFR Testing

·       Often not covered by insurance unless documented elevated homocysteine

·       SpectraCell Labs offers a copay

·       Any lab now offers a cheek swab

·       23andme includes this along with an array of other detox genes

·       Doctors data offers a nice DNA Methylation Pathway Test

·       Amy Yasko offers new to Nutrigenomic profile that comes with a long interpretive report.

 MTHFR Results

  • MTHFR C6 77T - more known cardiovascular concerns with thrombus formation
  • Homozygous C677T: 75% loss of function
  • Approximately 45% of population has one copy of C677T
  • MTHFR A1298C can have more neurological symptoms, but is thought to be less of a concern
  • Homozygous 81298C: 40% loss of function
  •  Heterozygous A1298C and C677T together: 40% loss of function
  • Increased B2 increases stability and function
  • Bypass this defect with L-5-MTHF
  • Just because you have MTHFR are doesn't mean you need methyl-folate …it depends on the environment and how the gene is expressed. If substrates or cofactors are depleted then the polymorphism may express its self.

Positive for MTHR, now what to do:

·       Younger, healthier patients with low NO can do great with L-5-MTHFR and that may be enough. You will also need B2 cofactor

·       Chronically ill need more

·       Don't treat until: fix lifestyle and diet, remove all folic acid from diet

 Rescue for Over-Methylating

·       Symptoms: HA, aggression, anxiety, feeling terrible if taking too much L-5-MTHF are or mB12

        Rescue for over-methylating:

·       Niacin – 50mg up to every 30 minutes until reactions stop

·       Potassium possibly

·       Hydroxy B12 can also be helpful by reducing NO
